The Jackson Township Police Department was called to a home on Smithpond Road in Jackson Township by a homeowner who was cleaning in his home and came upon a World War II Japanese Hand Grenade that was in his home for almost 60 years.
Police Chief Jerry Leedock and Officer Carl Puskar on arriving at the home notified the Jackson Township EMA who also called the Luzerne County EMA and the Scranton Police Departments Bomb Squad to respond to size up the event.
Sgt Guy Salerno of the Scranton Police Department Bomb Squad was on scene and decided to detonate the device in a large hay field away from any homes, residence or farm animals.
The Hand grenade was detonated safely and was determined to be live and could have been deadly if the homeowner did not call the Police Department and have the situation handled by professionals.
